The judges at a wine tasting in 1976 in Paris, France, ranked California wines higher that French products and gave California wines a new reputation for quality among the French. The quality of California vines and the skill of the state's winemakers were the reasons for the triumph.

The production of fine sparkling wines from California began in the 1960s and are based on the traditional grapes of Champagne, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Despite their close relation to the French varieties, California sparkling wines developed their own distinct styles.

Merlot: a kinder, gentler grape

California Merlots are often delicious and have finally been made widely available. Many producers include a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to give the lighter Merlot more structure. Good selections and a history of the wine are given.
