The not-so-thin man: food and the detective novel

Fine foods are central to many modern detective novels. But the hard-boiled detective genre of the 30's and 40's featured liquor. English detective stories have food references but only as they relate to the plot. The change reflects the better education of the authors, and the rise of the female hero.

Recipes are presented for North Carolina pulled pork sandwich with grilled Vidalia onions; Greek barbecued lamb with tomato, red pepper, feta and olive salsa; and Asian barbecued Cornish hens. The appropriate wines for these meals are white Zinfandel, Merlot and Chardonnay, respectively.

An elegant dinner party
