Cartoonist Rube Goldberg became famous for his cartoons that depicted elaborated and outlandish contraptions. His popular comic strips featured gadgets that required monkeys, dogs, bearded men and fleas to perform their tasks. His name came to be used for anything considered too complicated.

Legendary folk heroes include superhuman lumberjack Paul Bunyan and cowpoke Pecos Bill. The superhuman status of John Henry might have been based on a real railroad worker. Another folk hero, sharp-shooter Mike Fink, was a real person.
