George Trautman restored Avon Old Farms School to its glorious traditions after he became headmaster in 1968. The school was founded in 1927 but fell into disarray by the 1960s. Trautman still oversees Sports Camp, a school tradition that helps incoming freshman adopt to Avon's way of life.

Sporting camps in Maine are a great place to enjoy fishing and other aspects of the great outdoors. Tomhegan Wilderness Lodge at Moosehead Lake, Grant's Kennebago Camps at Kennebago Lake, and Bald Mountain Camps at Mooselookmeguntic Lake are described.

The availability of passenger train traffic once found in Maine is recalled, as the current service is not very good. A trip from the Portland Union Station to Kennebago, ME, which ended in 1935, is described.
