A tale of Ale: A few devoted beer makers are keeping an old New England craft alive

Each year, the owner of Cambridge Brewing Company, Will Meyers, visits a nursery in west port to harvest flowers for his Scottish-style heather ale, to make gruit, a medieval form of beer, he scours the nation to find herbs such as sweet gale, yarrow, and wild rosemary. Tim Wilson, who owns the historic Norwitch Inn, harvests the crop in his yard and adds them to some batches of his beer, also makes beer with imported English raw materials that perfectly represents the New England brewing style.

Jim McNeely and his wife, Bobby Moore, have an impressive terraced garden of shrubs, perennials, and evergreens on a dramatic slope overlooking Casco Bay. Their low-maintenance garden has almost everything ranging from Japanese anemones and asters that extend the gardening season into the fall, to red-vined dogwood and evergreens during winter.
