Article Abstract:
The recently revised PPG2 (planning policy guidance) on Green Belts confirms that Green Belt areas are designed to contain urban spread, and that they are also useful for protecting the countryside. It is argued that the new policy simply confirms the existing position of the Green Belt and that it does not adopt any new, more relevant, patterns of development. A study has revealed that only 3% of day trips are made to an urban park or recreation ground.
