The issue of the legality of same-sex marriage divided the state of Vermont. A ruling that allowed gay or lesbian couples the same legal rights as married couples was praised by newspaper editor David Moats, and the paper won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for the editorials.

Michael Allen of Lewiston, ME, won $5.86 mil in the lottery in 1988. Allen was generous to the point of being gullible to his family and friends who squandered his money away. Allen was murdered on April 1997 by 2 of his tenants who have been convicted in the case.
