Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle, the British pioneer of the jet engine, died on August 8, 1996 in the US. His configuration of single-shaft turbojet with single-stage centrifugal compressor and axial turbine launched the jet engine industry worldwide. About 100,000 Whittle engines, built not only in Britain and the US but also in Australia, Belgium, France, Canada, Sweden, Italy and Switzerland, powered combat, experimental and commercial aircraft.
