The acceptance of birth control in popular culture can be traced through its handling in fiction. Excerpts from nine novels are discussed. They range from Mary McCarthy's 1956 "The Group" in which Dottie fears to mention it, to Terry McMillian's 1992 "Waiting to Exhale" with its pithy, frank Gloria.
