Air is far from empty though people cannot see it. It contains its own microscopic universe which teems with a dense brew of life. Airborne life forms, collectively called aerial plankton, constitute a web of ecological relationships that scientists barely understand.

Marconi met with suspicion when he arrived in Cape Cod, MA, in 1901 and attempted to send radio signals across the Atlantic. In 1903 he succeeded in producing cross-Atlantic telegraph tapes, but his local messenger would not be bossed around.
