Closing in on a killer

One of 2,500 American newborns are afflicted with cystic fibrosis (CF). The disease is a leading genetic killer of young people in Western countries. Doctors hope to cure CF through a new experimental therapy which makes viruses deliver spliced genes to defected cells and make them functional again.

Issues concerning the case of Ryan Dant who suffered from the genetic disease MPS I are discussed. Particular attention is given to events leading to the scientific research which lead to the discovery of a drug which saved Ryan's life.
