The high-speed handpiece dilemma
Article Abstract:
High-speed handpieces have revolutionized dentistry but they have significant drawbacks that manufacturers must address. These devices are used to cut away decayed tooth in preparation for a filling or crown. They must be sterilized, but the heat can damage the parts and cause them to wear faster. This can be solved by developing heatless sterilization. Manufacturers have already introduced handpieces that do not require lubrication. The light element in the handpiece is also damaged by heat, as is the swivel mechanism. The handpiece head should be as small as possible.

Please pass the plural pease: there's no disagreement, when verbs count, one and one does not always equal two
Article Abstract:
A compound subject is often followed by a singular verb form in common usage. Several examples from journalism and other literary forms are given in which this structure appears. Why this apparent disagreement is sometimes right, is discussed. The use of the term 'hardscrabble' is examined.
