UK's The Serenading Service was started by a couple, who met when the man was asked by his friend to serenade the woman. The service harks back to the beginning of serenading in 16th century Italy. Spreading across Europe, undergraduates among Renaissance Spaniards formed groups which serenaded for a fee.
