Norwich University and the Reserve Officers' Training Corps have developed a Mountain and Cold Weather Rescue Team which practices in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The team's participants excel in life saving techniques such as treating hypothermia, how to build a snow home and what wild foods can be eaten.

The importance of survival skills are best illustrated in the real-life exploits of combat heroes who relied on their survival training to help them endure harsh conditions. Air Force Captain Scott O'Grady evaded Bosnian troops in 1995 by using the skills he learned in survival training school.

The cold truth

Frostbite and hypothermia occur in cold weather when people take part in outdoor recreation activities and can be prevented by wearing proper clothing, having proper equipment and keeping lots of food on hand. Hypothermia and frostbite care are described.
