A paraplegic bound to a wheelchair nearly lost his leg when he absentmindedly set a hot baking dish down onto his lap. Although the burn later healed, his grandfather still thoughtfully made him an oak board to cover his lap when he cooks in the kitchen.

The military does not reward its soldiers for risking their well-being for that of a civilian. However, as a once-selfish American soldier fighting in Vietnam discovered, saving a person's life gives a measure of fulfillment no medal can offer.
