The town of Cheshire, MA, constructed a giant cheese weighing 1,235 pounds and sent it to Pres Thomas Jefferson as a gift on New Year's Day, 1802. The president was said to have been delighted with the gift, a replica of which is displayed in the town center.

Four members of a search unit rescued the crew of the La Conte, a 77-foot fishing vessel, which encountered head winds that averaged 60 knots. The survivors recovered from hypothermia and did not suffer permanent injuries.
