Quinupristin/Dalfopristin
Article Abstract:
The FDA has approved Synercid, an antibiotic containing quinupristin and dalfopristin. It should be used for treating enterococcal infections that are resistant to vancomycin as well as skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Studies have shown that not all patients will benefit from the drug, but it could be life-saving for many. It has severe side effects including excessive blood clotting, joint and muscle pain, and swelling. It may also interact with other drugs. Consequently, it should be used with caution and only when indicated.

Article Abstract:
Science educator Morris Shamos writes that only those who will be scientists need study it in depth. Others should learn it as a part of culture, only for content. A graduate of anti-science Eton College differs with Shamos, seeing science instead as an orderly process whose core should be learned.
