The Los Angeles riots were a display of social rage prompted by the sense of powerless that is felt by minority males. Americans must recognize their common history, focus attention on the common good and generate new leadership if racial problems are to be solved.

Former civil rights activist Bob Moses established the Algebra Project, an innovative program to teach mathematical principles to inner-city middle school students, in Massachusetts in 1982. In 1992 he brought the program to the students of Mississippi.
