A journalist, who was raised in the Long Island suburbs, returned to the area after an absence of almost 30 years, and describes the visit. The lifestyle of the area seemed changed, less isolated, and perhaps more unified with the life of Manhattan.

Look who's saving the elm

New York City is one of the last bastions of healthy elm trees, that elsewhere, are declining in number from Dutch elm disease. When the city was low on funding of tree care, citizens protested until money was found to protect them from the disease.
