The war crime trials held at Nuremberg, Germany at the end of World War II emphasized the principle that individuals are responsible for atrocities they personally committed even when they were obeying orders from their superiors. Many Nazi officers and soldiers were sentenced to death or life imprisonment for the deaths of 11 million Europeans.

The new crop of individuals joining the military are more pragmatic in their approach to their military career. These new entrants see the military as a job opportunity which provides for personal security, rather than as a call for national service and patriotism.
