Serious training in competitive shooting often begins at the age of 12. Many gun clubs have junior programs that provide equipment and facilities. Competing locally can lead to national matches. Members of the US Shooting Team are selected at the US International Shooting Championships.

One of the events at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA, is the Men's Double Trap, in which shooters must hit 150 clay targets thrown two at a time in different directions. Olympic hopefuls must learn to shoot safely, enter tournaments, and participate in try-outs.
