Bring back the heavy metal
Article Abstract:
There is a strong potential market for custom keyboards in the publishing industry. There are over 1 million QuarkXPress users, over 2 million Adobe PageMaker users and millions of Adobe Photoshop users. The increased productivity custom keyboards would provide would justify their greater price, as long as Quark, Adobe and Macromedia agreed to support them. Custom keyboards for typesetters in the 1970's included keys for every imaginable command and one even included a trackball. But the ASCII keyboard has been neglected as other areas of computer technology have been continuously improved. The result has been that software programs have incorporated things like pop-up menus, palettes, and keystroke shortcuts to overcome the shortcomings of the ASCII keyboards for specialized applications. These work-arounds are difficult to remember and reduce productivity.
