Names being given to children can reflect the exposure of the parents to such particular stimuli as television programs or celebrities, as the names result from the stimuli. The American Name Society speculates that names of political figures are no longer popular.

At the Hancock, MA, Shaker Village a visitor can go back in time and examine the lives of the Shakers, a Christian sect famed for its devotion to simplicity and its art, furniture and cookery. The Shakers flourished in the mid-19th century but were celibate.
