Outsourcing the public good: For-profit companies are taking over the government's human service jobs
Article Abstract:
Texas is planning to outsource work by consolidating 12 health and human services agencies into 4 and handing over the 2,500 jobs to the private sector agencies, in an effort to reduce state costs by bringing in private sector companies to do the state work. The move to privatize public assistance in Texas and other states could give good results but at the same time the risks associated with the failure of the job due to outsourcing to low-wage, low-benefit countries would remain.
