When Sen James Jeffords decided to quit the Republican Party and become an Independent, he based his decision on principles he learned in childhood. He believed the Republican Party did not have the country's priorities correct, and that he could not represent the state of Vermont correctly as a Republican.

Herbert Philbrick was a member of a group of communist conspirators in Boston during the 1940s. Unbeknownst to his colleagues, he was also working for the FBI and became the government's star witness in a case in which 11 communists were found guilty of conspiring to overthrow the US government.
