Look Ma, no chromosomes!
Article Abstract:
Cell division of chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis depends upon the interactions with a bipolar spindle, the spindle is capable of functioning independently of the presence of chromosomes. A series of experiments show that early in the spindle-assembly process microtublues appear, coalesce in bundles and reorganize themselves into bipolar structures even in the absence of centrosomes and kinetochores. The function of chromosomes is to provide a favorable environment for this microtubule assembly.
