The 1863 Battle of Gettysburg was reenacted on Jul 3, 1998, by some 15,000 Civil War enthusiasts. They were commemorating a pivotal event in American history, one that marked a turning point in the Civil War, presaging as it did the eventual defeat of the Southern confederate army.
