"Love is home-sickness": Nostalgia and lesbian desire in 'Sapphira and the Slave Girl.'
Article Abstract:
Historical aspect of slavery merges with nostalgic desire in Willa Cather's 'Sapphira and the Slave Girl' as time and place assume the role of lost love-object instead of a setting. As Cather experiments with the form, she uses the genre of Gothicism to limit the effect of brutality and sexual violence. The mother-daughter reunion in the epilog is an idealization that replaces the trauma of heterosexulaity, sadism of lesbian desire and violence through regression. The novel's nostalgic desire complements its gothic apprehensions as memories of home hide horrors of history.
