Selling democracy short: elections in the age of the market
Article Abstract:
Campaign marketing, US style, is beginning to take hold in Australia. The use of marketing strategies that included sophisticated opinion polling and market research in elections was evident in the 1980s. In the 1996 election standard campaign practices include limited media access to candidates, image projection, negative advertising and political marketing to manipulate debate. Political marketing in Australia runs the risk of persuading rather than informing voters.

The arithmetic of the Telstra sale
Article Abstract:
Political debate surrounding the sale of the rest of Telstra is about the issue of whether a fully privatized company can adequately service rural areas. The government contends it can accomplish this by maintaining regulatory control, but others believe the sale widens the gap between Australia's rich and poor. It also increases foreign ownership, resulting in social inequality and less sovereignty.
