Bethany Hamilton, a thirteen-year old who was placed second at the 2003 National Scholastic Surfing Association Championship, lost her arm in a shark attack while she was surfing. Bethany lost 60 percent of the blood in her body during those minutes; doctors say she survived because she was in perfect shape from surfing and swimming.

Stephanie Kinghorn, who wanted to be a writer, was so outgoing that she instantly made a million friends at Riverside Secondary School. Stephanie felt abandoned by her mother and she also had broken up with her boyfriend. All this depressed her and she committed suicide.
