Plastic surgeon Francisco Bucio almost lost his hand after being pinned under rubble due to an earthquake in Mexico City on Sep 19, 1985. After two operations and countless therapy and practice sessions he was able to regain his hand's dexterity and to resume medical practice.

Hurricane Andrew hit Florida on Aug 23, 1992, with an eye 19-kilometers wide and winds of 280 kilometers-per-hour. Although losses to business and private property were placed at $25 billion, victims expressed relief at surviving and show tenacity by focusing on rebuilding.

In the jaws of a shark

Eric Larsen was attacked by a shark on Jul 1, 1991 while surfing off California's Monterey Bay. He was severely wounded in both arms and in the left leg, but his presence of mind and the strong determination to live enabled him to survive.
