Close to 39,000 Gulf War veterans reported experiencing myriad undiagnosable symptoms upon returning home from the Middle East. Learning about their plight, Sen. Don Riegle initiated an investigation into the potential cause of this puzzling illness, which has since been named the 'Gulf War Syndrome.'

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Vietnam War veterans is a life-threatening disease if not diagnosed. The shock that the veterans experienced during the war gives them a sense of separation and depression that hinder them to live a productive life.

Gulf war triggers PTSD increases
Article Abstract:
The VA reported a 28% increase in PTSD cases in 1991 over 1990. The increase was blamed on television coverage of the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The VA was criticized for delaying the recognition and treatment of the PTSD cases.
