Planning ahead: when the pencil is mightier than the computer
Article Abstract:
Sketching out page design and layout ideas with paper and pencil is still faster than using a computer, at least where column widths, page depth and subheadings are concerned. Other aspects of design can be performed on a computer screen. Line counters, grid sheets, type specimens and production notes are some tools that can assist with the actual physical layout. Line counters help calculate the number of text lines that can fit on a page. Grid sheets help to ensure alignment of a page. Type specimens show a range of various fonts in printed form. Production notes record margins, fonts, sizes, headings and art for reference and use in future projects.
