The end of the Cold War has fueled a debate on what type of armed forces the US should maintain. There have been many proposals from different groups such as the National Guard Assoc and the Center for Defense Information. However, the proposals that have received much attention come from Gen Colin Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Rep Les Aspin, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

The minimization of military forces and the decrease of weapons system development efforts are part of Bill Clinton's administration plan to limit defense spending. The government plans to save $72-B by reducing Army, Air Force and Navy personnel divisions and equipment.

The defense industry: the pain of peace
Article Abstract:
The end of the Cold War against the Soviet Union has led to the decline of the defense industry. Companies that manufacture missiles, attack submarines and other weapons systems are reportedly shutting down causing the unemployment of thousands of skilled workers.
