Shrubs are hearty plants that do well with a minimum of care, but Hasselkus outlines a shrub-maintenance program.

Hardy rhododendrons for Heartland yards
Article Abstract:
Rhododendrons and azaleas, which usually are thought of as warm-weather flowers, are also available for those who live in the colder climates of the Midwest. At least 10 types of rhododendrons are suitable for the area, and eight types of Northern Lights azaleas also have been developed.

Bulb gardens: the beauty of Heartland

Three Midwestern bulb gardens, the Fellows Riverside Gardens in Youngstown, OH, the Powell Gardens near Kansas City, MO, and the Fernwood Botanic Garden near Niles, MI, are described. All three gardens provide spectacular displays of flowers, especially in the springtime.
