Desperadoes and lawmen: the folk hero
Article Abstract:
A conflict that may be called the Western Civil War of Incorporation was waged in the American West from the 1850s to the 1920s. It often involved small, independent ranchers and farmers, cowboys and loggers against the larger economic enterprises such as the railroads, mining and banking interests. This war produced folk heros such as Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett and James Butler Hickock on the side of law, order, Republicanism and big business. They were pitted against William Bonney, Jesse James and Butch Cassidy who became cast as social bandits trying to steal back their legacy of freedom.
