The tobacco industry directly generates 2.3 million jobs and an undetermined number in the medical fields servicing smoking-related health problems. This shows how far smoking has developed since Europeans first smoked with the Cubans in 1492. Chronological landmarks in smoking are presented.

A study aimed at assessing the consistency and fairness of dentists in 28 stateswas conducted. The inconsistencies of the results imply that treatment depends on each dentist's professional judgments. Overcharging and overtreatment were common problems.
