Afro-American Horace Pippin survived World War I with a paralyzed right arm to launch his career as an artist. Pippin gained prominence in the US for his depictions of wartime personal experiences. His paintings conveyed positive messages such as brotherhood and peace.

Barbara Turnbull: getting on with it

Barbara Turnbull became a quadriplegic after being shot in the neck on Sept 23, 1983. Despite her condition, she was able to finish a degree and work as a newspaper reporter for the Toronto Star.
