The town of St. George in coastal Maine is like many there in that there are sometimes uneasy relations between people whose families have been there for generations and newcomers who often have more economic and political clout. Both groups however have a positive influence on the town.

The true story of Ruth Priscilla Colbath, a New Hampshire woman whose husband abandoned her in 1891, is told. She stayed in the same home for 39 years and waited for her husband, who traveled to Cuba, Panama and other places. He returned home three years after his wife died.
