Garter Inc., a Connecticut-based research firm states that about 980,000 people were victim of phishing frauds those are thefts via computers and Internet with an intention to charge goods or steal money. The phishers first operate by hijacking the names of trusted banks, internet services providers, credit card companies, and online retailers and then use fake e-mails and websites to fool people and force them to reveal their personal information like the credit card number, user names, and password.

Jean Paxton began publishing letters in newspapers addressed to the killer of her son, Jamie. The killer responded to the letters, allowing law enforcement agents to construct a criminal profile. A man came forward to point a possible suspect, Thomas Dillon, after reading the published profile. Dillon eventually confessed and was sentenced to 165 years in prison.

The mother of a murdered youth found a way to reach the murderer by publishing deeply emotional letters in the newspapers. The police were then able to use the killer's reply as a lead for identifying him, and was aided also by a friend of the murderer who had become suspicious of his behavior.
