The icebreaking vessel Sir John Franklin sailed into the Gulf of Boothia on Aug 21, 1992. It was the first time a vessel had broken through the ice, and the voyage marked sealifting as a new way of delivering goods to the Inuit village which had been supplied through costly airlifts for years.
