Army Capt. Meredith Huggins led the 700 GIs with an order to stop the Japanese from capturing Port Moresby in 1942. Amidst the fatal jungle of New Guinea, caught in between two Japanese forces, Huggins and his men bravely carried out their mission, saving Australia from the threat of invasion.

The American Legion served the country in the battlefields during World War II and in the political and social arena after the war by lobbying for better housing and jobs for veterans. They sponsored the GI Bill which was officially called the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944.
