Lewis & Clark's excellent adventure: our original pioneers-and why they still matter

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark crossed the Continental Divide in 1805 at Lehmi Pass with 33 members including one woman and child whose presence assured the suspicious Indian tribes that a group traveling with a woman and child only meant peace. These two pioneers inspire the Americans to face the unknown with fortitude, to forge a harmonious society out of diversity and to deal with unfamiliar cultures with sensitivity and respect.
