Bergeson confirmation may open the door for Channel One
Article Abstract:
The appointment of Sen Marian Bergeson as California Department of Education Superintendent would make it easier for Whittle Communications' Channel One broadcasts to be implemented in California public schools. Former superintendent Bill Honig objected strongly to Channel One and its 10-minute broadcasts with 2 minutes of advertisements. Channel One is available to 8 million high school students in 12,000 schools throughout the US, more than 40% of this segment of the population. Channel One is prohibited from broadcasting in New York. Channel One furnishes schools with televisions, satellite dishes and video cassette recorders in exchange for broadcast privileges.

California may be the home of 21st Century "multimedia," but its schools still operate in the stone age
Article Abstract:
Multimedia in education provides students with an alternative method of learning which allows them to explore subjects more thoroughly at their own pace. Education experts and multimedia producers see the need for California toinvolve itself more in the enhancement of educational multimedia by formulatingeducational technology bills and setting standards for schools to follow. California has started a more systematic address of its educational technology policy while the California Center for School Restructuring has begun developing information-age classrooms in the state.

Bergeson nomination killed in Assembly
Article Abstract:
Opposition from California Assembly Speaker Willie Brown and the California Teacher's Assn were the major factors in the defeat of Marian Bergeson's nomination as state superintendent of public instruction. Bergeson's plans to run for the post in 1994 and her status as a Republican prompted the opposition, which is being blamed on partisan politics. Bergeson offered little information on her educational agenda during committee meetings, in which attacks against her became increasingly personal.
