Betting on politics
Article Abstract:
Californian Indian tribes are using their increasing political power to ward off attempts to rid them of the source of their increasing wealth. Around 45 of California's 104 Indian tribes have become involved in gambling casinos. These bring the tribes an estimated $2 billion, and video slot machines are a major source of this income. Californian Attorney General Dan Lungren and Governor Pete Wilson have tried, for six years, to ban these machines, but the Indians are using their political connections, gained through combined tribal donations totalling $4 million, to fight the threat to their income.

Handling problems wrongside up
Article Abstract:
California retains all the attractions it had earlier in the 20th century but the economic, political and social situation of the state is worsening because of its wrong approaches to its problems. The state does not spend adequate money on primary and secondary education but it has spent a lot of money unnecessarily in rebuilding schools to safeguard them from earthquakes. There is no longer any openness in public policy and legislature has become incompetent as a policy-making body.

Divorced dads fight back
Article Abstract:
Coalition of Parent Support is a group of more than 700 fathers who are fighting the new child-support guidelines in California. The 1992 guidelines, which were enacted to equalize payments in all counties, raised payments an average of 25%. Fathers lobbying against the increases maintain they cannot afford the higher payments, but supporters of the rights of divorced mothers counter that previous payments were too low, especially in light of the high cost of living in California.
