Bill Clinton goes to Washington
Article Abstract:
The 1992 US elections has ushered in an era of unified control by the Democrats in both the White House and the Congress. This has fueled a public expectation for overnight success in solving the country's problems. And in fact, the closer ties between the executive and legislative branches will no doubt be for the country's benefit. However, Republican influence has not been eliminated completely. It is expected that they will filibuster planned tax increases in Clinton's economic plan. In addition, Clinton's plans to permit gays in the military and to enact a presidential line-item veto are expected to meet stiff congressional resistance.

Alan Cranston
Article Abstract:
Democratic Senator Alan Cranston was censured by the Senate Ethics Committee for what it describes as improper behavior in interceding with regulators in behalf of his political bankroller, then-savings and loan magnate Charles Keating Jr. Under question is his ability to effectively serve the California state in the 13 months left of his tenure in the Senate. Cranston, in a plea bargain, formally accepted the committee's condemnation in return for being spared a vote of censure by the full Senate. However, he immediately turned around and denounced the committee.
