Budget referendums and government spending: evidence from Swiss cantons
Article Abstract:
The effect of mandatory referendums on spending decisions in Swiss cantons is investigated. Regressions for Swiss cantons are estimated using panel data from 1980 to 1998 and it is found that mandatory referendums reduced government spending by nineteen percent for the median canton.
