Burton and Boxer: in the rough and tumble world of politics, it's rare to find a lasting bond between players
Article Abstract:
There is still a strong personal relationship between California Senate Pres John Burton and Senator Barbara Boxer, who first met in late 1973. Boxer was greatly inspired by Burton, and volunteered to work for him. He became her mentor, and played a significant role in her subsequent political success. She feels that he has been particularly influential in encouraging her to be true to herself. He feels that her political success has demonstrated that you must believe in yourself if you are to encourage others to believe in you.

The path to power
Article Abstract:
Phil Burton was a congressman from San Francisco who began the first of his twelve terms in 1949. He represented the Democratic Party first as a legislator and then as a congressman from San Francisco. The article consists of excerpts from the author's book 'A Rage for Justice,' a profile of the life and times of Phillip Burton.

Park barrel
Article Abstract:
Phil Burton is considered a legend in both Californian politics and the environmental movement. During his stint as chairman of an Interior Committee subcommittee on national parks, Burton was able to preserve more national parks and wilderness than all the administrations before him combined. His laws preserved almost 5% of California's landmass and almost 10% of the entire US landmass.
