Ghita Ionescu and comparative communist politics
Article Abstract:
Ghita Ionescu's comparative work on communist governments suggested that the totalitarian model was not sufficient to describe the governments of Eastern Europe. In his "The Politics of the European Communist States" and "Comparative Communist Politics," he argued that these nations had sufficient political contrasts to be studied beside Western European nations. Ionescu believed that popular movements, not internal political reforms, would bring down communism. He also advocated reintegration into Europe as the path that Eastern European countries should follow.

An echo of Ghita Ionescu's reading notes: travails of the Canadian state
Article Abstract:
The case of Canada and the state of relations between Quebec and the rest of the country suggest that the nation state as a form of government is more fragile than many assume. Canada will need to address its governmental structure, regardless of Quebec's success in achieving independence. The Quebec problem has strained relations between the federal government and other regions, such as the western provinces. Restructuring the Canadian government, while imposing short-term costs, may result in long-term benefits to the populace.
