Controller
Article Abstract:
Democrat Kathleen Connell won the post of California's Treasurer by garnering 61% of the votes compared to the 33% received by Ruben Barrales. Connell's campaign was better financed, generating $3 million in funds compared to Barrales's $750,000. Connell received some negative publicity for her legal challenge to a Public Employees Retirement System rule that prevented board members from receiving campaign contributions from investors. Despite his defeat, Barrales is credited with conducting an effective campaign and for projecting a nice-guy image.

Controller
Article Abstract:
Incumbent Controller Democrat Kathleen Connell led the race for the office of Controller during the 1998 California primaries. San Mateo County Supervisor Ruben Barrales did his best to raise funds but still trailed behind Connell even his home turf. He also trails behind Connell in money matters with Connell having nearly $1 million in the bank and Barrales having only $160,000. However, Barrales is counting on Latino support in the coming Nov 1998 elections.

Treasurer
Article Abstract:
Former Assembly Speaker Curt Pringle and Democratic millionaire Phil Angelides led the race for the office of the Treasurer during the California primaries for 1998. Pringle was backed by Greek millionaire developer Alex Spanos while Angelides will receive the financial support of Greek-American Angelo Tsakopoulos, Spanos' rival. It is expected that Angelides will resort to the slash-and-burn campaign method against Pringle during the Nov 1998 campaign period.
